Netbook paragraphs:
I used the net book in my sanitation class. In small groups they would surf the web looking for News Happenings related to Sanitation. We would discuss each group findings some web sites they used were foodsafety.gov or the Center for disease control. I found it to be a very engaging activity to teach sanitation and relate it to a real life situation they might have heard in the news already which lead to further discussion.
The other avenue we used net books was for making quick power points or posters relating to topics of sanitation. Each group had a different topic, such as hand washing, when do send an employee home, or restrict an employee, or when do we change gloves.

Freerice.com
Students were placed in small groups. A leader was designated for each group, and I tried to mix student vocabulary levels within each group. Students were given 5-8 minutes to “play” on the freerice vocabulary site. 10 grains of rice are donated (to fight world hunger) for each correct response. Groups were also competing against each other. However, some netbooks were slower than others, so the competition factor was not what I had hoped. Students did seem to enjoy the activity, and were excited to use the netbooks. Unfortunately, they were also frustrated with the slow pace of the netbooks.
News PowerPoint Presentations:
Students spent a few minutes scanning for current news on the two links I provided on my site (Omaha.com and CNN). WE then chose a local news topic and a national news topic. Each group could choose from those two topics. They were to find and read an article on the chosen topic and then, complete a PowerPoint to present to the class. Each group was provided a handout of a basic PowerPoint template I had created, as well as a link to that on my site. Students presented their PowerPoints to the class. They needed to identify the main idea, 3 to 5 major details, a group response to what they read, and a related visual. Again, the negative part of the activity was the slow speed of the netbooks. When the news sites were accessed, the students thought that the ads of those sites contributed to the slow pace.

Netbook Group Activity:
I used the netbooks this quarter for review. I made a review module in the tutorial software that comes with the book, called Wiley Plus. The students worked in pairs and completed the review online via the netbooks. Since the scores showed on the big screen, we had a little contest. The group with the highest score received two extra points for the assignment. It was fun and they enjoyed and learned from the activity.
